Headquartered in Plano, TX, Tyler has 27 US locations including a Yarmouth, ME facility that is home to a Hosting Data Center and SAAS Data Center that support solutions for their customers.
Tyler Technologies engaged with Leading Edge Design Group (LEDG) to develop a strategic plan and offer recommendations for their data center portfolio. Tyler was having issues with their data center cooling which led the team to take advantage of LEDG’s comprehensive suite of data center services to address immediate concerns and create a plan for the future to accommodate their growth.
FIRST THINGS FIRST
LEDG recommended that Tyler Technologies install hot aisle containment to the main data center to minimize the mixing of cool supply air streams from the computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units and hot exhaust streams from the IT equipment.
A typical challenge for data center leaders is finding a way to leverage existing cooling infrastructure to support ongoing technology upgrades. As technology is added, refreshed, consolidated, and virtualized, per rack density (in kilowatt, or kW per rack) increases and the capacity of legacy cooling infrastructure is often reached or exceeded.
LEDG reviewed the run hours on the two CRAC units that were running simultaneously to support Tyler’s data center to assess the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). Industry standard PUE averages around 1.5 and Tyler’s data center hovered at 3.02 indicating inefficient use of power requirements for lighting, fans, and other ancillary tools.
The new properly designed and installed containment system now increases the return temperature to the CRAC unit, improving capacity and performance. The implementation of hot aisle containment is also improving redundancy in Tyler Technologies’ center by increasing the ability of the only one CRAC unit to support the entire data center load in the hosting space.
AN EYE ON THE FUTURE
The development of Tyler Technologies data center strategy included the analysis of existing documentation, critical infrastructure maintenance and performance information, IT load data, staff interviews on data center performance, and detailed mechanical, electrical, and architectural assessments. LEDG used industry best practices for strategy, design, reliability, efficiency, capacity, and scalability and included a budget and efficient utilization of capital synopsis to keep the data center on premise using the existing infrastructure.
LEDG delivered a reliable long-term data center strategy that provided detailed options, recommendations, and schematic drawings for how Tyler Technologies could use their current location to expand its data center portfolio. High tech companies with explosive growth can often upgrade their existing data centers by effectively using their available space and implementing innovative strategies and improved equipment.
